18650 vs. 21700 batteries

The number describes the cell's size: an 18650 is 18mm wide and 65mm long, a 21700 is 21mm by 70mm. The larger 21700 generally holds more capacity, while the 18650 is the most widely used size in box mods. The two are not interchangeable — use the size your mod is built for.

Which battery does my mod use?

Check the mod's spec sheet or battery door. Many box mods take one or two removable 18650 cells; others take 21700s or have a built-in battery that can't be swapped. Pod systems and most kits with a built-in battery (for example the VOOPOO VINCI E120, which has a 4,500mAh internal battery) don't need separate cells at all. If your mod takes two cells, always use a matched pair of the same brand, model and age.

Amp ratings explained

A battery's continuous discharge rating (CDR), in amps, is the current it can safely deliver without a break. The Golisi 18650 S30, for example, has a 25A continuous rating and 3,000mAh capacity. Choose a cell whose continuous rating comfortably covers what your mod and coil draw — the higher the wattage and the lower the coil resistance, the more current is needed. Go by the continuous rating, not a "pulse" or "max" figure.

Battery safety basics

  • Check the wraps. Don't use a cell with a torn or nicked wrapper; re-wrap or replace it.
  • Use a case. Never carry loose cells in a pocket or bag with keys or coins.
  • Use a dedicated charger. An external charger made for lithium-ion cells is the safest way to charge removable batteries.
  • Stay within the rating. Don't build or run coils that draw more current than the cell is rated for.

Vape battery FAQs

What battery does my vape mod use?

Check the spec sheet or battery door. Most removable-battery box mods use 18650 or 21700 cells; many newer kits and pod systems have a built-in battery and need no separate cells.

What does the amp rating mean?

It's the continuous discharge rating: the current the cell can safely supply without stopping. Pick a cell whose continuous rating covers what your mod and coil draw.

How should I store vape batteries?

In a plastic battery case, away from metal objects, heat and direct sun. Inspect wraps regularly and replace damaged cells.
